Parks for Health

We know that time spent in parks is good for your mental and physical well-being and helps reduce obesity, diabetes, heart disease and the impact of dementia. Time in parks also increases your physical activity levels, which has additional health benefits. Parks bring people together and help reduce loneliness and social isolation.

We want to transform Cally Park into a public health asset for the local community to use and enjoy. We want Cally Park to be a place that enables good physical and mental health by offering a programme of well-being activities.

Five Ways to Wellbeing

A review by the New Economics Foundation of the most up-to-date evidence suggests that building the following five actions into our day-to-day lives is important for well-being:

Connect…

Be Active…

Take Notice…

Keep Learning…

Give…

Connect...

With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Cally Park is a great place to connect with friends and family. We have lots of places to sit, relax or play! There is a café and public toilets in the park, enabling you to spend as long as you want here.

Be Active...

Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game. Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

A complete circuit of Cally Park is 600 metres. Arrows mark the route to follow. Why not try walking or jogging around the park? Another way of keeping fit whilst making a positive contribution to the community is by joining our team of community gardeners. No prior gardening experience is required to join in.

Take Notice...

Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

Cally Park is forever in a state of change. Each season brings beauty and surprises. Try and notice something new each time you visit, perhaps a different flower in bloom or birdsong you’ve not heard before. Post a picture of what you discover here! We’re also running a series of walks throughout 2021 to help you discover the natural world on your doorstep.

Keep Learning....

Try something new or rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

Join one of our park tours or dementia-friendly tours and discover the fascinating history of Caledonian Park and the famous ‘Cally Market’ that once took place on this site. Learn a new skill by joining our team of community gardeners

Give...

Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

Become a community gardener and help us make Cally Park a great place for everyone to enjoy or join the Friends of Caledonian Park and connect with the local community.
