About the Walk
Join us, at the end of Refugee week, in a walk that explores the stories of some of the refugees and migrants who have come to Islington over the centuries. They have escaped danger, war, hardship as well as political and social persecution. Their stories, their influence on Islington and how Islington has responded – both historically and now – make for a fascinating walk. Discover the building that was London’s first purpose built gymnasium, the home of the African National Congress in exile and the site of Britain’s first black arts centre as well as organisations now that are supporting refugees.
The walk will last between 1.5 and 2 hours. Please note – quite a lot of the walk is uphill!
This is the first walk of the day. It starts at Kings Cross Station and finishes at Caledonian Park. Caledonian Park will be hosting a series of free events celebrating Refugee Week, including an exhibition and storytelling in the park. You will arrive in time for start of these events which you are welcome to attend.
Due to Covid numbers are strictly limited. Please cancel your ticket if you cannot make the tour to allow others to attend.

About Caledonian Park
The history of Caledonian (Cally) Park and the local area extends beyond the iconic clock tower itself. The park and local area hide many clues to the history of the cattle market and the subsequent “Cally” market, as well as stories of recreation and radicalism which you can explore in this park tour.
