Health & History – a dementia-friendly walk around Cally Park

Join us as we launch our very first dementia-friendly ‘Health & History’ walk of Cally Park

Dementia Action Week takes place 17 – 23 May 2021. This is the perfect time for us to launch our very first dementia-friendly walk of Cally Park. The walk has been developed by Susan Hahn, an experienced Islington Guide.

To mark the occasion we are delighted to be joined by the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Janet Burgess. The Mayor is a passionate advocate for people living with dementia in Islington and was herself a carer for someone with dementia for many years. The Mayor recently said “It’s important that we create a safe and inclusive community in which people living with dementia can live as independently as they want to for as long as possible. We also want to provide a supportive environment for carers, family members and friends of people living with dementia. This is particularly important as people affected by dementia have experienced significant harm from the restrictions to social contact and reductions in services during Covid-19.”

About the Walk

Walking is great for both our mental and physical health. Additionally, time spent in nature has been proven to boost our health. Join us for a gentle walk around Cally Park park with Islington Guide, Susan. This walk especially welcomes those living with dementia and their carers, though anyone is welcome to join (however, please bear in mind that this tour has been developed for people with dementia and may be slower-paced than our regular tours).

We will walk and talk for about an hour and then there will be a chance to play skittles and sit down and buy a cuppa from the park café at the end of the walk.

About Caledonian Park

The history of Caledonian (Cally) Park and the local area extends beyond the iconic clock tower itself. The park and local area hide many clues to the history of the cattle market and the subsequent “Cally” market, as well as stories of recreation and radicalism which you can explore in this park tour.

• Dress appropriately for the weather as the tour will take place outside.
