Volunteers Week takes place 1-7 June every year. It’s a chance to recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities and say thank you. We’re very lucky that we work with some fantastic volunteers who help make Cally Park a great place to visit.
Firstly, we’re eternally grateful to The Friends of Cally Park (FOCP). FOCP are a community group of local residents who maintain and care for the two wildlife gardens to the north-west corner of the park, the community orchard at the south-west of the field, help tend the raised square beds at the South gate, and also plant bulbs and flowers around the park generally. They also support activities in the park throughout the year and run a range of regular activities including planting, tending, and weeding. Everyone is welcome to join in. Find out how here.
Secondly, we run community gardening sessions and welcome a diverse group of people from the local community. No prior gardening experience is necessary and we especially welcome people new to gardening. Activities include weeding, planting and litter picking and helps the park look great and an inviting place for everyone to visit. It’s a great way of getting some fresh air and gentle exercise whilst making a difference in the community. Sessions take place on the second Friday of the month. Find out more about joining in and here.
You may not know that the clock in the clock tower is mechanical and wound weekly by hand by a team of volunteers. It takes around 20 minutes to wind and is quite a physical job! We’re very grateful for all the hard work of our clock-winding team. If you are a regular visitor to the park you will have noticed that the clock has temporarily stopped. Covid restrictions has meant that we’ve had to pause the winding, but we will resume winding once social distancing restrictions have been fully lifted.
We’re fortunate too that we have support planning our social media content. Our very talented volunteer Manalikah Campbell has been working with us for over a year and has helped us launch our social media accounts as well as our monthly content. Her help has been invaluable and we’re very lucky to have her as part of our team!
As life slowly starts to return to normal we’ll be offering new volunteering opportunities throughout the year. If you’re interested in joining our team please keep an eye on our volunteering website or drop us a line. We’d love to hear from you!
